Monday night with #SMCSYD

Last night I went to the latest Social Media Club Sydney event at the Arthouse Hotel which was all about measuring the success of social media campaigns.

While the venue was certainly able to fit everybody in – and there was quite a buzzing crowd – unfortunately there were a few sound problems.

But regardless the speakers were interesting. I quite liked  Matt Granfield’s presentation as he pulled together the different department’s take of measuring the success of a campaign – I even laughed at his ‘chick from PR’ comment as those around me pointed their fingers at me full of mockery saying, ‘that’s you’.

Jye Smith’s Lord of the Rings analogy was clever and helped keep my attention even as those around me lost focus because it was hard to hear.

Have a look at his photos on Flickr.

What was missing last night was the live Twitter stream. The night’s moderator, Heather Snodgrass later told me it was because those at the last event didn’t behave themselves with their posts and that it distracted the speakers as people were reacting more to the posts then to the speakers.

I did point out that isn’t the whole point of social media is you have to let go of control and allow people to engage and interact. I guess a little bit of fine tuning is needed for the next event.

Overall it was a good night, with plenty of people around me tweeting away on their iPhones – alas tweeting on my archaic mobile phone is no easy feat and best avoided – and there was plenty of social media talk with many interesting people.

I’m looking forward to the next one.

Thanks for coming and your support, really appreciated.

  2. Hi Jo,

Agree with you re last night – while the venue was impressive it was probably equally impractical… Too big, too echoey, too much alternate discussion!

One further thing that made last night difficult was the topic itself – explaining measurement isn’t the most stimulating thing and it was a tough environment to do so, particularly when the previous events had been more ‘panel debate’ oriented. I think Matt’s talk was great because he humanised the process but they all had a tough time as it’s hard to give too much away when your metrics are what clients pay for! Perhaps some more detailed case studies would work better next time?

Anyway, hopefully the next one will be a bit more ‘controversial’ and the feed will be allowed back into the room…

By all accounts, and by all I mean Mumbrella, it sounds like the Twitter feed will be back for the next SMCSYD, http://tiny.cc/gR7Ew

  4. Thanks for the kind words Jo! Glad you got something out of it, even if I did use you for laugh fodder :)

We were hampered by the limited AV (with dreadful sound and tiny screen resolution, no vision mixer and no dedicated AV) and the lack of WIFI. We are addressing the venue and the AV to make sure the lack of Twitter and poor sound is fixed.
